Heart Surgery

So my dad had to have a quadruple bypass surgery last week. Apparently 60 years of good southern cooking finally caught up with him. And that's the thing that really gets me. My dad is in relatively good shape. He's not running an Ironman every other weekend, but compared to the majority of Americans, he falls into the fit at 60 club. I guess that is one way we can slip into trouble. When I look around at the world and then look at my life, I think I am doing a pretty good job. But the world is not and should not be the standard of judgement. And another problem is I base alot of my judgements on outside parameters. My dad looks fit, so he is fit. When the truth on the inside is that his heart is in poor condition. So I pray with the psalmist,
"Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me."
I pray for a new heart. One that beats in rhythm to God and the world around me.
